Description

Flies are one of the most prevalent pest threats for food businesses in Côte d’Ivoire. Several species are common in Abidjan: the common house fly (Musca domestica), the blowfly, the fruit fly and the drain fly. Adult flies have sponge-like mouthparts, allowing them to feed on liquids and semi-liquids. They are often metallic in appearance, with feathery hairs on the terminal antennal segments of males. In Côte d’Ivoire’s tropical climate, flies breed year-round, with populations peaking during the rainy season.

Habits

House flies are attracted to decaying organic matter, feces and rotting food — all common in Abidjan’s open-air markets, restaurants and waste disposal areas. Fruit flies seek sugary substances and breed in overripe fruit, spilled liquids and fermented materials. Drain flies thrive in moist environments and lay their eggs in drains and sewage systems. Flies are major vectors of disease, transferring bacteria including Salmonella, E. coli and cholera onto food surfaces and preparation areas. For restaurants, hotels and food processing facilities, a fly infestation represents a serious HACCP compliance risk and threatens both staff health and customer confidence.

Defense

  • Identify the species first — different fly species require different treatment approaches. Your Orkin Pro will identify the species present and locate all breeding sites before applying treatment.
  • Eliminate breeding sites — remove decaying organic matter, clean drains regularly and maintain proper waste management. Without breeding sites, fly populations cannot sustain themselves.
  • Apply targeted treatments — Orkin Côte d’Ivoire uses insect light traps, residual sprays and fly baits strategically placed to eliminate fly populations while meeting HACCP compliance requirements.
  • Maintain ongoing prevention — flies can re-enter from surrounding areas rapidly. Regular monitoring and treatment adjustments are essential, especially during the rainy season.
